Enough

My shock and horror at Monday's massacre at Virginia Tech is augmented by the fact that it took place at a university--and I spend most of my time at a university. Yet I can't actually imagine something like that happening here at Berkeley, even though it certainly could. Tens of thousands of people study and work here, and all kinds of strange people from the community at large wander through our campus every day. More important, though is my anger that nothing will be done to prevent tragedies like this again. We've had enough mass shootings in the past ten years in this country. The Democrats seem to have figured out that advocating gun control is a good way to lose elections. The Republicans can't be counted on to care, either. Two, or five, or ten years from now, this will happen again, and we will all be shocked and horrified, and yet again fail to do anything to prevent it from happening again. I suppose one could always shrug and say that we get what we deserve. I, for one, refuse to take such a cynical, dim view of the American people. This only makes it all the more tragic.
